Challenge
Mediatrix Germany is a printing company whose entire order and payment workflow ran on phone calls and email chains. Every order required manual back-and-forth - quotes, confirmations, invoicing - consuming staff hours and introducing errors. As order volume grew, this process became a bottleneck.
They needed a digital ordering system, but one built specifically for their B2B customers - not a generic consumer storefront. Off-the-shelf platforms like Shopify were evaluated, but the recurring subscription costs, transaction fees, and limited B2B customization made them a poor long-term fit for a business with specific workflow requirements and the internal expertise to manage their own infrastructure.
Approach
We developed a Magento-based B2B e-commerce platform tailored to Mediatrix’s business operations:
- Business-only storefront - purpose-built for their B2B customers with account-based access, custom pricing tiers, and bulk ordering workflows
- Integrated payment processing - streamlined invoicing and payment collection replacing the manual email-based process
- Order management dashboard - real-time visibility into order status, fulfillment tracking, and customer history
- Product catalog with print specifications - structured catalog supporting the technical attributes specific to print products (paper weight, finish, dimensions, run size)
- Self-hosted infrastructure - deployed on Mediatrix’s own servers, giving them full control over data, uptime, and operating costs with no recurring platform fees
We chose Magento (Adobe Commerce) over SaaS alternatives like Shopify based on total cost of ownership. Shopify charges monthly fees plus transaction percentages that compound as order volume scales. Mediatrix had the technical capacity to manage their own hosting, and their B2B workflows required customization that SaaS platforms either don’t support or charge premium tiers to unlock. Magento’s open-source framework gave us the flexibility to build exactly what the business needed without ongoing platform lock-in.
Result
The platform digitized an entirely manual process - orders that previously required multiple phone calls and email threads now flow through a structured system with automated confirmations and tracking. Staff time previously spent on order intake is redirected to production and customer service. By self-hosting on their own infrastructure, Mediatrix avoids the recurring costs of SaaS platforms while maintaining full ownership of their customer data and ordering pipeline.
